Class Policies

Class Passes

All RSDS classes are organized into blocks. For example, swing classes will all take place on the same night, in the same location. The level of instruction will become more advanced every hour.

Your membership dues entitle you to attend any level on any night. Your will also be added to our email mailing list where we send announcements of club meetings, outings and Houston dance events that might be of interest. This is a very low volume list, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Club dues

Students: $10
Rice Alumni: $20
Other: $50

Note: These prices are for the entire semester. RSDS does not charge on a “per-class” basis. Pay once and attend all of the classes for the entire semester.

Partners

No partner is necessary. Students will rotate in the classes. This means, for good or for bad, that you won’t dance with any one person for more than a couple of moves. If you come with a partner and wish to stay with them through the class, please contact the instructor beforehand to see if they will allow it.

What to wear

For all classes, wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily.

For Ballroom wear shoes you can easily turn in, this means no rubber soles, flip flops, or shoes without heel support. If you don’t have any shoes without rubber soles you can dance in just socks (or put masking tape on the soles of your shoes)

For swing, bring flat shoes that slide easily, or else bring masking tape to put on the soles.

Class Locations/Parking Info

Ballroom classes are located in the the Grand Hall of the Rice Memorial Center (student center). It is building number 57 on the campus map. Parking can also be located on this map

Can’t make the first day of classes?

Don’t worry! You are welcome to join us at any time during the semester. The instructors review the previous class every week, and they will be working on basic steps for at least the first couple of weeks.

What level of classes should I attend?

There are no prerequisites for any of our classes. However, the following guidelines may help you out if you are unsure:

  • If you have never taken lessons before, then you should attend the beginning classes.
  • If you have taken lessons before in any style of dance then you should attend the intermediate classes, but you will also benefit from the beginning classes.
  • If you are a good dancer (in any style of dance) then you should take all the classes, because everyone will want to dance with you :)
