officer elections time!

Dear RSDS’ers –

The reign of your 2009-2010 RSDS officers is coming to a close, and it’s time to choose the new leadership that will guide and grow RSDS in the coming year!

If you’re interested in getting more involved with RSDS – as an elected student officer OR just as a person who wants to help get stuff done – please contact me!

(Election ballots will be sent out one week from this Friday, so if you want to run for an office, contact me before April 8.)

These are the officer positions that need filling:

1. PRESIDENT — The primary representative and contact of the organization. Ensures compliance with SA and University rules. Sets a vision and direction for the club, supports the Event Coordinators, and makes sure we stay true to our mission of promoting all sorts of social dance at Rice. (Can run as individual or pair.)

2. EVENT COORDINATORS (Ballroom, Swing, and Tango) — Plans, organizes, and executes classes and events. Contacts/schedules/hires instructors. Present at classes and events to coordinate set-up, clean-up, and music. (Can run as individual or pair.)

3. TREASURER — Handles reimbursements, maintains records of the club’s funds. RSDS’s primary contact with the Cachier, Payment Solutions, and the Finance office. (Can run as individual or pair.)

4. SECRETARY (a.k.a. Publicity Coordinator) — The information nexus. Knows what’s going on, and gets the info out to the members and community. Leads publicity and recruitment efforts. (Can run as individual or pair.)

Students, please consider serving RSDS as an officer next year. If you have any questions, you know where to find me!

cheers,
Michael

p.s. As a reminder, there’s no Swing class tomorrow due to Mid-term Break.

New venue for dancing! (SPJST in Pasadena)

The SPJST in Pasadena (3609 Preston) will be having a “variety dance” – about 95% Ballroom Dance & Latin Dance on selected Saturday, 7 pm – 11 pm. Cost is $8.

Feb 27 Variety Dance w/F. Arfele
Mar 27 Variety Dance w/F. Arfele
July 24 Variety Dance w/F. Arfele
Sept 25 Variety Dance w/F. Arfele

For schedule & pictures:

http://spjst172.blogspot.com/2008/05/welcome-to-spjst-lodge-172-in-pasadena.html

This is the largest dance floor in Houston – 2.5 x Chandelier. It is a fabulous wood floor, wear your suede-bottom shoes. This is not a sticky floor.

Now, the DJ is Frank Arfele (from Melody Lane);

To fill this big size of the floor, this venue usually only has country-western dances in the past.

Lately, they start “variety dances ” – an effort to attract ballroom dancers. However, for the past one year, they have always used their country-western DJ!

Now, they have gone to extra expense to try to make this work – hiring Frank Arfele as DJ.

Since this place is sooo big, your group can practically claim any corner as your own territory. The Mainland group usually sits near the snack bar.

Please support this effort of the SPJST & claim the new, excellent floor from the CW for more ballroom dances in the 2011!

PS: Directions:

From 45, take beltway 8 towards Pasadena. Take the last free exit (Genoa / Red Bluff, Crenshaw, Preston).

Turn left on Preston, travel thru the lights at Crenshaw and Fairmont. Lodge is on the right between Fairmont and Vista.

If you get to Spencer, you passed it. They have a large sign. Park on either side of the building.

DWO 2009 a smashing success!

Dances With Owls was a smashing success. Teams from all across Texas – including UT, SMU, A&M, and UofH – joined us for a night and a day of excellent dancing, fellowship, and competition.

Some of the comments I’ve heard so far are:

“Thanks again for everything. We had so much fun on Saturday!!!! (There is not an amount of exclamation points that could express this fully :D ) Is your club looking at going to any other comps soon?”

“I was very excited to hear other schools, specifically A&M & UT , say what a great comp this was and that they so much fun – and they would definately come back next year.”

“You an RSDS did a great job hosting the event and getting other campuses to come see what Rice is about!  Great job and fabulous event!”

“This was literally the most fun I’ve ever had in my life.”

Event Co-Chairs Emilia Stepinski and Autumn Allen deserve rounds of applause for juggling all the details and preparations for this event. Our deepest appreciation also goes to Super-Awesome Team Mom Pam Shefman, Scrutineer Drew Shefman and Emcee Pat Walsh. (Without their experience and wisdom, we’d all be in way over our heads.) And lastly, thanks to all the folks who volunteered throughout the weekend. DWO is an entirely volunteer-run comp, and without our dedicated members and friends, the event simply couldn’t happen. So thanks to everybody. I’m really proud of this event, and I hope you are, too!

p.s. Thanks to all the dancers who joined us from the Houston community and other collegiate communities state-wide. We hope to see you next year!

shuttle to RGA for tango TONIGHT!

Argentine tango classes begin tonight!

For the next five weeks, tango expert Indre Rapalaviciute will be introducing us to Argentine Tango fundamentals for social dancing.

Classes will be held Wednesday nights, 7:30-9:00pm (Sept. 16 – Oct. 14) at the Rice Graduate Student Apartments.

If you have a car, you can drive to meet us there. (1515 Bissonnet St.) Parking is free.

IF YOU DON’T HAVE A CAR, you can take the shuttle from campus. The shuttle ride is very short and easy. Just catch the Rice Graduate Apartment bus on the lab side of the inner loop (i.e. at Keck, or between the RMC and Geology building) and ride over.

Argentine tango is a very versatile dance that focuses on the connection between lead and follow. It is a really fun, expressive, and social dance, and I hope you’ll come learn with us this evening!
