I’ve received several questions, so let me try to answer them for everybody.
Anybody may attend these classes. Prices vary based on whether you’re a student or not, but they’re all quite economical. You pay once and that’s good for every course taught by RSDS for the entire semester. You don’t need a partner; students will rotate and will dance everybody in the class. You should dress comfortably, as you may well break a sweat. (We highly recommend you wear deodorant!)
There are many different kinds of shoes that can work for dancing. The main thing to avoid are rubber soles. Leather is fine, if sometimes a bit slippery. Many dancers have suede-soled shoes (either made that way from the start or glued on later). Suede (sometimes also called “chromed leather”) provides a middle-ground between slippery leather and sticky rubber. You can get close to this by putting masking tape or moleskin on your regular shoes, but those wear out quickly.

I have some questions about the dance classes. I see that the price for students is ten dollars. Is it just for Rice students? For classes on Wed.,is it Standard Ballroom or Latin?

I believe it’s for any student anywhere (show your ID, etc.). For the ballroom classes’ agenda, your best bet is to show up and ask the instructors what they’ve got planned.

Where is Willy’s Pub? Where should I park as a visitor?
October 4th, 2007 at 12:46 am
Willy’s Pub is in the basement of the student center (the Rice Memorial Center or RMC). There are a variety of on-campus parking lots nearby. Rice has a whole web page to explain how visitors should park: http://parking.rice.edu/visitors.cfm
Of particular note is a new, lower-priced option for frequent parkers:
Starting this year the University is trying out a special parking card for visitors attending performances at the Shepherd School of Music. The cards will cost $50 and give the user unlimited access to the Alice Pratt Brown Lot after 4:30pm for one semester. Please contact our office for more details at parking@rice.edu or 713-348-7275. For those wishing to purchase one of these special cards please bring a $50 check to the Parking Registration Office, on the B-1 Level of the Central Campus Garage.
